Fire rips through garage and scorches owner's classic cars

A fire tore through a detached garage near Geistown Monday afternoon.

The homeowner told 6News that it's not the loss of the garage he's upset about, but what was inside.

Just after 3 p.m. Monday, black smoke was filling the sky.

Crews said the fire was heavily involved by the time they got to the garage on Kinzey Street.

"And our main concern was controlling the exposures with the homes on either side," Richland Battalion Fire Chief Bob Heffelfinger said.

The heat melted much of the siding on the back of the house within minutes.

The owner said it even blew out some windows.

It came as a harsh realization when he said he was in the garage not two hours earlier.

"Upon his arrival, he advised us of the unfortunate situation with some classic automobiles in his garage and he was quite upset with the loss," Heffelfinger said.

Luckily, no one was hurt, but the owner said the fire gutted his a Lincoln, '70 Challenger and '65 Mustang which he's had for nearly 40 years.

A Harley and Yamaha were also destroyed in the fire.

The owner said he's mourning the loss as if it was the loss of a family dog.

However, the turnout from Richland, Windber and Oakland kept it from doing much more damage.

"We were very lucky today. In fact, we have a lot of fellas out of town on vacation, so, to have the type of response we had out of Richland was phenomenal, and we got a great response from Windber as our rapid intervention team, and from Oakland, as well. "

As of Monday night, there was still no word on what caused the fire.

The Fire Marshal should be back on scene Tuesday.

Facebook page directed towards moms is taking off and saving money

This is the time of year that many communities are holding yard sales, but a Johnstown native has found a way to use Facebook to buy, trade and sell.

The site appears to keep moms busy and is about to take off.

Lisa Kozich has created a social network for moms.

It’s creating new friendships and perhaps, more importantly, saving families money.

Every day, multiple times a day, millions of people log onto Facebook to check newsfeeds, notifications and network with ‘Friends,’ but Kozich saw another advantage.

Her page is giving moms more buying power.

"They're going on themselves, and their own little safe network. They're not worrying about anyone else,” Kozich said. “It's more local so they know who this person is or another person is; so it's [more safe]."

Kozich lives in Pittsburgh, but decided to launch Mommy’s Club Garage Slae in her hometown.

It’s creating thousands of likes in Cambria and Somerset Counties.

"And on the Facebook page, when the moms get together in the local areas, and they buy, sell and trade their items. We also list local businesses in the area, in Pennsylvania strictly. We do right now, but eventually we're going to go nationwide,” Kozich said.

The page creates a viral garage sale. Moms can sell or buy any item through a post or a comment.

"What they'll do is they search through the albums on Facebook, and they search through the albums on the website, and they'll say, 'oh I want that' you know, 'come meet me,’” Kozich explained.

"There are toys, there's clothing, even household products that I don't even use anymore. We go ahead and sell those also," Amanda Shellenberger said.

Kozich said the page is monitored to make sure it’s safe and trustworthy.

When a mom wants to make a transaction, Kozich said the buyer and seller pikc a place to meet.

"They'll come in a parking lot, they'll meet up, they'll do the transaction and pretty much they get to look at all the items before they purchase; and just make sure they're not damaged and everything works well.”

Shellenberger is a mom of two girls.

She said the page is affordable and convenient for her family.

"I am a stay at home mom. So, my husband is the only one working in the household and with the economy being so bad, and everything being so high priced, you can get stuff next to nothing that looks like it is brand new on the site. You can get double of what you could if you went to a local store and bought it brand new,” Shellenberger said. “So, it is a big savings and it does help that I can shop at the convenience of my own home, instead of having to go to the store and drag the kids with me. I get to go online, look what I want, set up a time and just go."

The site isn’t just attracting kid-friendly buyers, there’s also merchandise for sale for a mom’s interest.

One mom said she saw end tables, couches and chairs.

The success Mommy’s Club Garage Sale has seen in the area has generated such a buzz; Google has been in contact with Kozich.

She has more cities slated to bring the garage sale off the lawn.

La Jose cemetery damaged by storms before Memorial Day

Sunday evening a strong line of storms made its way through Clearfield County.

6 News found areas in Southern Clearfield County that received damage, some major, because of the storms.

One place that was damaged was the La Jose cemetery.

At the cemetery, multiple trees were uprooted and fell on top of headstones.

Joseph Peace, caretaker of the La Jose cemetery, said that on Friday he prepared the cemetery for Memorial day.

Peace believes a tornado went through town on Sunday evening.

There are no reports of a tornado, but meteorologists at 6 News said that winds did gust as high as 60 to 70 mph.

Peace could not believe the destruction the storm left at the cemetery.

It was a race against the clock Monday morning for several of the cemetery volunteers.

Despite the destruction, the Memorial Day service was still on.

Around 1 p.m., dozens of people gathered together to remember fallen soldiers.
Peace said the cemetery did have insurance to cover the damage.
